Who doesn’t love a Malteser (or a Whopper, depending on what part of the world you call home)? I certainly do, along with their malty cousin, Milo. Milo also has a habit of mysteriously making its way onto a spoon and straight into my mouth—much like peanut butter—when no one is looking and, more importantly, no one can judge. And I’m not the only one in the house, we’ve had to implement a Milo rationing to prevent hungry teenagers from inhaling it by the spoonful (like their mother).
If any of those indulgences sound like you, these Malteser Brownies will too. I promise they’re worth making.
I decided to liven up my usual brownie repertoire for a girls’ weekend. As much as my Chocolate Marble Brownies and Gluten Free Chocolate Brownies are regular favourites, this group has tasted most of my standard lineup, so I needed another trick up my sleeve. These brownies did exactly that. I was pleasantly surprised by just how well they were received. One friend insisted there should be none left for the family because they were simply too good to share, while a fellow ocean racer declared they’d be making an appearance on her next offshore adventure.

The difference here is that these aren’t just brownies with a handful of Maltesers thrown in. Brown butter adds a rich, nutty depth, milk chocolate keeps the flavour creamy rather than intensely dark, and a little Milo ties it all together with that unmistakable malty note that makes Maltesers so addictive.
Whether you’re baking for friends, taking a plate to share, or simply looking for an excuse to swap a bag of Maltesers for a warm brownie instead, these are easy to make and even easier to eat.
If you can’t get Milo where you live (or you’ve somehow never tried it—you really are missing out by the way), malted milk powder is an excellent substitute. If you prefer a more classic chocolate brownie, you can leave the Milo out altogether, although it’s like salt for me – how could I not sprinkle it in?
And if you’re more of a cookie person, don’t worry—I couldn’t stop at brownies. A Malteser cookie version is coming soon.

Worth Making?
- Yes – if you love Maltesers and want a brownie where they actually taste like the star, not just an add-in
- Yes – because brown butter, milk chocolate and chopped Maltesers create a can’t stop at one type of brownie
- Yes – if you are bored of regular brownies but still want it to taste like one
- Skip it – if your perfect brownie is simple, dark and unapologetically chocolate. This recipe is sweeter from the maltesers and milk chocolate drizzle
- Skip it – if you’d rather keep your brownies classic and elegant, these are rustic and unrefineD

Malteser Brownies
Ingredients
- 225 grams browned butter
- 150 grams dark chocolate (55–60%)
- 100 grams milk chocolate
- 170 grams caster sugar
- 80 grams brown sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 95 grams plain flour
- 20 grams cocoa powder
- 25 grams milo
- 150 grams maltesers roughly chopped
- 75 grams milk chocolate (for topping)
- 75 grams chopped maltesers (for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 170°C fan (180°C conventional) and line a 20cm square tin with baking paper.
- Brown the butter until golden and nutty, then immediately pour it over the chopped chocolates.
- Leave for 2 minutes before stirring until smooth. Whisk in both sugars.
- Add the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla. Fold in the flour, cocoa, and Milo until just combined.
- Fold through the chopped Maltesers and pour into prepared tin and bake for 20-30 minutes, until the edges are set but the centre still has a slight wobble.
- Allow to cool completely. Melt 75 grams milk chocolate and drizzle all over the top and cover with the chopped maltesers.
Make it your own way
- Replace the milk chocolate chunks with white chocolate for a sweeter contrast
- Finish with flaky sea salt to balance the sweetness
- Add ½ teaspoon espresso powder for a richer chocolate flavour with a hint of coffee
- Replace the Milo with malt powder for a deeper malt flavour
- Leave the chocolate drizzle and crushed malteser topping off for a simpler and more easily transportable brownie
